Behaviour Problems

Behaviour Problems

Pets can develop behaviour problems for many reasons. Often these develop slowly over a period of time. They can be very stressful for the owner and put a strain on the relationship with the pet.

In many cases these problems can be resolved or improved with training and behaviour modification. This is not a ‘quick fix’ but many problem behaviours will improve with help. The sooner you are able to get help, often the easier it is to solve the problem.

We help with behaviour issues for both dogs and cats in the Rugby, Leicester, Lutterworth and Market Harborough areas.

How to Book a Consultation

The first step is to ask your vet for a referral. If your vet agrees then I will send them a referral form to complete asking for your pet’s medical history.

This step is really important as many behaviour problems can be affected by medical conditions. In particular pain can affect behaviour.  Sometimes any medication your pet might be taking might also contribute. It is important to rule these out, or treat them before starting any behaviour modification.

After your initial enquiry you will be sent a form to fill in, this is a case history questionnaire. This helps me to build up a picture of your pet, their routine and the behaviour problem. A video of the problem behaviour can be useful but only if it is safe to do so.

When I have received the form from you and the referral from your vet I will get in touch to arrange a date for the consultation.

What to Expect From a Consultation

An initial consultation visit usually takes from between 2-3 hours, and will usually take place in your home.  This allows me to see how your pet behaves in his normal environment.   During this time I will assess your pet and ask additional questions to clarify certain points. We will then discuss the possible causes of the behaviour and develop a training plan to resolve the problem.

If possible all family members should be present if possible.

What Happens After the Consultation?

  • I will send an individual treatment plan within 14 days of the consultation
  • Further advice is available by e-mail or telephone, in any case I will contact you 2 weeks after the consultation to check on progress. It is important to keep in touch
  • Additional one to one training sessions are available, if required, at extra charge.
Initial consulation (2-3 hours + written report) £120
This includes follow up by email and telephone and a one to one training session if required.
